The Out of Africa Festival

Between the 23rd - 30th May 2005 in Kingly Court and Carnaby Street, we brought you a carnival of sounds, colours and tastes that grabbed the imagination and broadened perceptions about Africa forever.

One of the event highlights was the live art installation produced by Beyonder where visitors were encouraged to write onto the art gallery walls their thoughts on Africa. Beyonder has pulled these thoughts together and created a poem entitled "The Wall of Words". Please click here to read the poem.

The event was heavy with music and dance, featuring, spoken words, African Jazz, classical African music, Afrocentric music, African hip-hop, Street dancers, circus performances, samba dancers, Gum boot dancing, capoeira and much more.
We hosted an array of some of the most exciting acts in African arts, such as Weird MC, Wunmi, Tunde Jegede, DJ Eric Soul, Koko Kanyinda, Malika Booker and Zena Edwards.
People encountered and enjoyed a broad range of African perspectives through talks produced by Roots (BBC London) featuring the likes of Horace Ove, Hannah Pool, Ty, Ras Kwame, Hassan Arero and Janet Asante.
We also featured an art exhibition by Creative Fruits, a fashion show by Anisa & Co and Evalution, plus Egyptian dance and Djembe drum workshops. This was enjoyed by all alongside mouth watering Ghanaian cuisine from Jollof Pot.
